However, there is a great news on the horizon, a soon to be established firm, XY Mobile Lao, is set to produce a variety of Lao handsets based on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and also develop a Lao system based on Google’s Android operating system for mobile.
The company also plans to develop on ‘Meego’, a mobile operating system based on an alliance between Intel and Nokia.
The firm believes by taking advantage of Android/Meego it will be able to deliver more than just SMS services in Lao, but also bridge digital diversity and enable access to mobile banking, mobile payments, credit top-ups, and internet services in the Lao language.
This new company will also support existing customers’ handsets, enabling them to install Lao script font and keypads. The work will be made based on local needs and also to serve operators’ as well. The firm also believes it is essential to provide the Lao general population with access to mobile phone services in their own language.
